The Great and the Good of the Golden Globes red carpet #fashion #awards #redcarpet #film

Screen Shot 2014-01-13 at 09.57.01So in the early hours of the morning, whilst we were all sound asleep, Hollywood was awash with stars as they turned out for the annual 2014 Golden Globe Awards.

In terms of the starry award ceremony there were some surprises with American Hustle being a big winner on the night with Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams who both picked up acting awards, and Matthew McConaughey scooping the best actor award for Dallas Buyers Club. But the top honour of best Film and best Director went to our very own home grown talent Steve McQueen and 12 Years a Slave.

But there was another scoring system taking place that evening, and it was in the fashion stakes. Although all the big hitters were out and acting as show ponies for the big designers, we have to say that there was nothing absolutely outstanding hitting the red carpet last night.

Here are a pick of our favourites:

In terms of trends, we saw lots of simple block colours, particularly on the ever-young Helen Mirren flying the British flag with a gorgeous teal Jenny Packham Dress.

Best supporting actress nominee Lupita Nyong’o for 12 Years a Slave was dressed head to toes in Ralph Lauren, securing her spot as a new Hollywood heavyweight in not only an acting capacity but also effortless style. We love the split sleeves that give almost a space age feel to this simple, elegant number. Screen Shot 2014-01-13 at 10.02.54

Sophia Vergara looked dramatic in a Zac Posen gown which we felt matched perfectly her Latino looks and larger than life personality, teaming it with some gorgeous turquoise jewellery she really stole the night for us.

Sitting slightly on the fence:

The acting world darling Jennifer Lawrence rocked out her favourite awards go-to designer Christian Dior, and although dramatic in length and width it felt a bit too ultra modern (maybe to match her new hair cut) with the slightly unflattering black hoops, but we love her anyway and hoping come oscar night we see something slightly more elegant and regal, after all she is the royalty in this game!

Uh oh this doesn’t look right!:

Sandra Bullock what are you doing?! Normally so graceful and high in the fashion stakes around this time of year, sadly, with this Prabal Gurung gown she’s stepping right out of panto and onto a losing streak! Patchwork quilting doesn’t look flattering at all, and that flamenco style skirt is soooo 1980’s (and no it can’t be classed as retro chic!)

Screen Shot 2014-01-13 at 10.02.04

Another longstanding glamourpuss gone wrong, Julia Roberts, gorgeous face, gorgeous figure, but is she stepping out as a school ma’am tonight? Stuffy and ever so slightly 1990’s scruffy, maybe both these ladies are trying to get back in touch with their youth? Sadly its really not working….oops!

Well that’s it, congrats to all the award and fashion winners for the night, there’s more big ceremonies to come so fashion fans stay glued to your seat!

What are you watching this weekend? We recommend THE HUNGER GAMES – CATCHING FIRE #film

Screen Shot 2013-11-22 at 16.37.24If you had any worries or concerns that Director Gary Ross’s successor would be turning this sequel into a Twilight esq format, where each film has its own unique stamp per director, and the lead character looks more and more bizarre as the films progress, then fear not, as The Hunger Games – Catching Fire  continues the franchise brilliantly.

In the second installment of the hugely popular film adaptation, Tribute victors of the 74th Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem. As a result, President Snow decides to hold the 75th Hunger Games in which all previous victors will once again fight against each other.

If you have been a fan of the books and then watched the first film, you may have felt a little short changed in terms of the detail throughout the Games section itself. Catering to a 12a audience, the first installment of this franchise lacked some of the more graphic scenes of violence throughout, and replaced this with clever jump cuts and edits to keep the action flowing. I for one, was one of those people, and felt slightly underwhelmed when walking out of that original viewing.Screen Shot 2013-11-22 at 16.40.18

However, this second film seems to have found its feet much more – realizing that there is a large share in terms of older audience members, it quite purposefully takes more risks. There is a whipping scene involving Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) the shooting of an old man who dares to acknowledge the revolution, and a very unceremonious punch to the face for Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence). Although these are all wincing to the eye, they are a refreshing progression for the film, and as the film tackles more grown up subject matter, you very much feel like you’re watching a much more grown up film.Screen Shot 2013-11-22 at 16.37.46

Once again the lead characters are portrayed well. Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen is brooding and thoughtful, more of the relationship between herself and Hemsworths Gale is explored, and Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta Mellark has realized that he must suppress his feelings in order to play the game and put on a great show. There is also an influx of new cast members (all the other Tributes get killed off in the previous film – in the style of a less brutal Battle Royale!) and one of the biggest surprises of this is Sam Claflin as Finnick Odair. With a flawless American accent, a smile to melt a lot of hearts in the female share of the audience, this British actor will probably use this character to cement his place in the Hollywood heart throb elite – Robert Pattinson better watch out!

Out with the old and in with the new is the way this second running of the film works, the style has been cleverly matched by Director Francis Lawrence to its predecessor and not a minute of filming is wasted. Even if you’re coming to the movie having loved the book, its truthful approach to what is written will be a welcome relief, and it may even hold some surprises for you too. Plenty of action for everyone, some eye candy for both boys and girls, and a very enjoyable film to watch. You will not be disappointed!

@coldplay release first #hungergames #catchingfire soundtrack song – Atlas #film #music

Screen Shot 2013-08-23 at 19.44.04

Now this is a first…never before have multiplatinum recording artists Coldplay ever contributed an original song  to a movie soundtrack, but The Hunger Games seems to have struck a chord with them and today they release the very first single from the soundtrack to this highly anticipated film.

Lionsgate and Republic Records have announced that the song – called ‘Atlas’ is going to be available via iTunes and all digital retailers as of today, and the soundtrack to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be released ahead of the actual film in November.

Chris Martin is reportedly a big fan of the books (who isn’t) and as one of the most iconic bands of this generation, its with no doubt that they’re going to produce a pretty spectacular song to accompany this epic next instalment of the film franchise.

The first Hunger Games soundtrack hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200 on its release with sales of over 175,000 making it the first soundtrack to top the chart since November 2009. It was the best selling soundtrack of 2012, the fastest selling soundtrack ever at iTunes and was earned itself a Golden Globe nomination and three Grammy Award nominations – so the pressure is on!

For those who cant wait for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, here’s a little run down of what you can expect from the next film:

Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has returned home safely after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victors Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is directed by Francis Lawrence and is based on the second book in a trilogy which written by Suzanne Collins that has sold over 50 million copies in print in the USA alone.

Put on a Hunger Games Party in 3 steps and may the odds be ever in your favour! #hungergames

Well if you weren’t already super excited about the next installment of The Hunger Games hitting cinema screens in November, you can get the reaping started with your very own Hunger Games themed party!

We attended a very special Hunger Games event day last week which gave us all the inspiration we needed to bring a little bit of Capitol into our lives for the end of the Summer. So forget the BBQ’s and go all out with stupendous style and the odds will ever be in your favour!

Step 1: Bake the Book!

No not literally, but we absolutely LOVED the Hunger Games cup cakes at the event day, and felt that no Hunger Games party would be complete without them. So here’s a really helpful video from across the pond, which will inevitably get your mouth watering for what is an essential party piece… the Mockingjay cupcake!

Step 2: Get the Look!

IMG_3533

Who would have thought the Capitol would have been so on trend in the real world. Well, as we found out there are two major fashion go-go’s coming out of The Hunger Games and one is Capitol party style and the other is Tribute tracksuits!

For the Capitol party style you can look no further than your local fashion retailer for some fantastic bits. It doesn’t have to cost your district to get Captiol fashion and there’s so much out there…

Screen Shot 2013-08-19 at 17.37.30We found this Rare Fringe Bandeau Dress at ASOS.com reduced from £45.00 down to £22.00 you too could be the girl on fire in this little number!Screen Shot 2013-08-19 at 18.14.17

And if you want to shuffle along like Effie Trinket, then how about these Chinese Laundry China Doll Heeled Shoes… you’ll need to splash out a little bit more, but once again they’re on sale at ASOS.com for £62.00 (RRP £120.00)

But if you’re feeling more in tune with one of the Tributes, then you might want to spend your cash on the futuristic exercise range from Lucas Hugh London. Having never provided products for movies before, its Creative Director Anjhe Mule was sought out and hand picked by Catching Fire Costume Designer Trish Summerville to help provide some of the amazing outfits for the films key stars.

Step 3: Top up Trinket Style

No party look would be complete without an Effie Trinket make over and the amazing make up artist who took care of Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth at the UK premiere told us that the key to Effie Trinket’s looks is clashing colours, blended together on the eyes and hyper real pale skin! Think Alexander McQueen with strong bold eyes and Geisha lips.Screen Shot 2013-08-19 at 18.29.30

She also mentioned that since The Hunger Games hit our cinema screens, people have really realized that make up can be much more fun, and that there really aren’t any rules, so maybe there’s a little bit of Capitol in this capital city after all!

So what are you waiting for, you have the food, the clothes and the make up to make a very Happy Hunger Games! Enjoy!!
