Remember your awkward teenage Summer with @Thewaywayback #filmreview #film

Screen Shot 2013-08-28 at 08.34.25

If you love Sam Rockwell as much as we do, then you’ll be queuing up to watch him in this quirky Summer coming of age flick which hits cinemas today.

The film follows shy 14-year-old Duncan as he goes on summer vacation with his mother, her overbearing boyfriend, and her boyfriend’s daughter. Having a rough time fitting in, Duncan finds an unexpected friend in Owen, manager of the Water Wizz water park.

Nothing overly dramatic happens in this film, it’s just more of a reminiscent and nostalgic journey into all of our uncomfortable adolescent selves where we’re discovering new things, good and bad, meeting new people and most importantly having that very awkward, lonely teenage Summer.

The film boasts a great cast and starts very well. We see a new Steve Carell, no longer a slap-stick comic character, this time a straight talking stepdad which any teenager would find offensive and domineering. Toni Colette is the ‘glass half full and things could be worse so I’ll put up with it’ mother of Duncan and Sam Rockwell is the saving grace coolest guy in town who runs (rather haphazardly) the Water Wizz water park.Screen Shot 2013-08-28 at 08.35.07

These are only half the key characters in the film, but immediately you see a pattern forming. These characters are very clearly stock and presented in an almost formulaic approach to what you would hope would make a good/poignant/funny film. In addition you have the constantly drunk neighbour – who provides a monologue of comic proportions as the family arrive at their Summer home; her overly confident sharp talking tween son, additional neighbours who turn Carell and Colette’s characters into relatable drunken parental figures around the dinner table and finally there’s the shy inquisitive beautiful girl who doesn’t conform to her bimbo girlfriends and inevitably becomes the object of Duncan’s affections.Screen Shot 2013-08-28 at 08.34.40

These all sound like the recipe for a classic coming of age tale, and if they had all come together perfectly The Way, Way Back would have been one of those must watch films, but something just doesn’t quite gel together. You will probably be willing this film to be much more enchanting than it actually is and will most likely find sanctuary like Duncan, at the Water Wizz water park where Sam Rockwell dominates. His effortlessness and ease provides a distinct contrast to the rest of the cast who feel slightly more contrived, which some may argue is a testament to his talent as an actor.

But by no means is this film unwatchable, there are some brilliant moments of comedy, and over arching reminders of many of our teenage experiences plus some brilliant performances across the board in their own rights. It’s hard to put a finger on what exactly doesn’t work, but you certainly do come away trying to work out what could just make it that little bit better

3 Stars

The Way, Way Back is out on general release from today.

Keep the Summer going with @fordhambeersuk American Craft Beers! #beer #drinks #summer

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 12.19.46

So just when we thought the Summer was beginning to say adieu and we were starting to unbox our Autumn fashion, there’s word that yet another heat wave is on the horizon! So to celebrate we thought it’s a perfect opportunity to open some bottles of beer – delicious American craft beer to be exact!

Whilst the sun shines on this side of the pond, having a taste of these lovely beers will bring back memories of holidays abroad (particularly to the US) or if you’ve never been it will probably bring to life your imagination as to what this land across the Atlantic might just be like!

Now for some history!

Fordham Beers originated in Maryland in 1703, formed to serve a new colony in need of good beer (aren’t we all!) the brewery was reborn in 1995 with a similar purpose and passion. In 1989 Fordham Beers opened its doors to the Old Dominion Brewing Company founded by beer enthusiast Jerry Bailey and the two breweries live side by side in Delaware.

Here’s some of the Dominion beers we tasted and reviewed:

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 12.14.59

The Beach House Pilsner

At a very affordable £1.95* per bottle we found this to be a perfect Summer lager. It has a good happy flavour with a refreshing and crisp taste. You can put the ciders to one side and lap this up next to the BBQ on a lovely Summer evening.

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 12.15.31

Hop Mountain

Apparently this little number is becoming the UK’s favourite out of the selection, and its not hard to see why. At a competitive £2.15* it’s a rich red ale with strong hop character and a medium bodied dry finish…perfect to cool you down on a hot summer night or after something a little bit spicy!

Now if its not all about the alcoholic beers for you , never fear, Dominion Sodas provide the perfect family summer drink too…

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 12.21.59Creamy Orange Soda

Now this really will bring back childhood memories… a modern take on a traditional American orange soda – creamy is the key word as you cut out the fizz and enjoy a very sweet easy to drink soda for only £1.95*

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 12.22.20

Black Cherry Soda

You can mix this number with a spirit of choice, but if you’re sticking to its traditional format you may feel that you’ll need an ice cube or two to help dilute its slightly over powering taste. Those without a sweet tooth need not apply! But for those with no trips to the dentist coming up, treat yourself for only £1.95*

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 12.22.41

Ginger Ale

We Brits just love a good old Ginger Ale, and with some very strong competitors out there like Crabbies, the market is a pretty tough place. This version is mostly for those who like a slightly lighter version of the popular drink, with a combination of ginger and citrus, you’ll either bask in its subtle taste or need to try something a little stronger.

So more choice for you all as we see the Summer continue to shine, so stay refreshed, stay merry and drink responsibly.

*prices shown are a guide and based on retail sales. Prices may vary by outlet and will be higher in pubs and restaurants.

** Fordham and Dominion beers are available at selected bars and restaurants across the UK including:

– In London: Electric Diner in Notting Hill; Beard to Tail in Hoxton;  Jetlag Bar in Fitzrovia; The English Pig in Westminster; The Diner in Soho; Bodean’s in Fulham; All Star Lanes in Brick Lane

-Outside London: Gordon Bennett in Surbiton, Surrey; The Brewery Tap in Brighton; Jake’s Place in Edinburgh; Colston Yard in Bristol; Chicago Rib Shack in Southampton.

Put on a Hunger Games Party in 3 steps and may the odds be ever in your favour! #hungergames

Screen Shot 2013-08-19 at 18.47.25

Well if you weren’t already super excited about the next installment of The Hunger Games hitting cinema screens in November, you can get the reaping started with your very own Hunger Games themed party!

We attended a very special Hunger Games event day last week which gave us all the inspiration we needed to bring a little bit of Capitol into our lives for the end of the Summer. So forget the BBQ’s and go all out with stupendous style and the odds will ever be in your favour!

IMG_3531

Step 1: Bake the Book!

No not literally, but we absolutely LOVED the Hunger Games cup cakes at the event day, and felt that no Hunger Games party would be complete without them. So here’s a really helpful video from across the pond, which will inevitably get your mouth watering for what is an essential party piece… the Mockingjay cupcake!

Step 2: Get the Look!

IMG_3533

Who would have thought the Capitol would have been so on trend in the real world. Well, as we found out there are two major fashion go-go’s coming out of The Hunger Games and one is Capitol party style and the other is Tribute tracksuits!

For the Capitol party style you can look no further than your local fashion retailer for some fantastic bits. It doesn’t have to cost your district to get Captiol fashion and there’s so much out there…

Screen Shot 2013-08-19 at 17.37.30We found this Rare Fringe Bandeau Dress at ASOS.com reduced from £45.00 down to £22.00 you too could be the girl on fire in this little number!Screen Shot 2013-08-19 at 18.14.17

And if you want to shuffle along like Effie Trinket, then how about these Chinese Laundry China Doll Heeled Shoes… you’ll need to splash out a little bit more, but once again they’re on sale at ASOS.com for £62.00 (RRP £120.00)

But if you’re feeling more in tune with one of the Tributes, then you might want to spend your cash on the futuristic exercise range from Lucas Hugh London. Having never provided products for movies before, its Creative Director Anjhe Mule was sought out and hand picked by Catching Fire Costume Designer Trish Summerville to help provide some of the amazing outfits for the films key stars.

IMG_3551

Step 3: Top up Trinket Style

No party look would be complete without an Effie Trinket make over and the amazing make up artist who took care of Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth at the UK premiere told us that the key to Effie Trinket’s looks is clashing colours, blended together on the eyes and hyper real pale skin! Think Alexander McQueen with strong bold eyes and Geisha lips.Screen Shot 2013-08-19 at 18.29.30

She also mentioned that since The Hunger Games hit our cinema screens, people have really realized that make up can be much more fun, and that there really aren’t any rules, so maybe there’s a little bit of Capitol in this capital city after all!

So what are you waiting for, you have the food, the clothes and the make up to make a very Happy Hunger Games! Enjoy!!

@rekorderlig & @companymagazine invite you to London’s Midsummer Party! @nailgirlslondon

IMG_3271

So last night Snoochie Boochies hit the ever so stylish world of Rekorderlig Cider and Company Magazine at the Midsummer House in Victoria Park. Hidden in the heart of this East London greenery is another world where you get ample chances to sample the various Rekorderlig Ciders (our recommendations are the Premium Passion Fruit and Strawberry Lime flavours) and bask in the summer nights with (on this occasion) members of Made in Chelsea and The Only Way is Essex! IMG_3263

Whilst that  might not be everyone’s cup of tea, there was plenty else to keep you occupied, including a Swedish BBQ stall with Swedish Hot Dogs and taster treat delights…plenty of Company Magazine copies to sit and read whilst its house DJ played soulful groove tunes…and if that wasn’t enough,  there was also a fabulous nail bar from Nail Girls London, a brilliant franchise set up four years ago from innovative founder Lynda Louise who’s flagship nail bar is based in the very cool Islington. Showcasing the “in” Swedish “V” style of polishing, we just had to give it a whirl and are pleased to report that our nails have never looked so good!IMG_3267

Why is this event taking place?

IMG_3272Last year Rekorderlig Cider launched the Winter Forest pop-up bar situated in the heart of East London’s Brick Lane.  It transformed the Truman Brewery into a magical Scandinavian hideaway, serving authentic Swedish food and cocktails, made from using different flavours of Rekorderlig. The Forest Bar ran for two weeks, injecting London with some truly Scandinavian culture.

Since the Forest Bar was such a success, Rekorderlig decided to bring the essence of Swedish summertime to England! Midsummer (introduction of the summer) is a huge celebration in Sweden, marking the start of long, lush sunny days and very little darkness (what a dream!). And now the long awaited pop-up Midsummer Swedish House event is taking place from June 21st – 5th July in Victoria Park.

It sounds amazing GET ME THERE!!

So is this event exclusive to reality series cast members and super blogs 🙂  like ourselves? No, absolutely not! You too can get involved and spend your summer evenings doing something very very cool and chilled. Here’s the link to make your Summer nights much much cooler (even though a heat wave is about to hit tomorrow!)

The perfect sunny mini-break Majestic Gorges de Verdon #travel #holiday #france #placestovisit

Thinking of that perfect mini break away? Well, our travel writer Katrina Santos Baron shares her tips for a fantastic trip to the sunny and picturesque Majestic Gorges de Verdon.

You can find out more about Katrina and read oodles of her fantastic writing on her own blog Katscapades.

Screen Shot 2013-05-10 at 13.19.24

Gorges de Verdon is a river canyon that is often considered to be one of Europe’s most beautiful. It is located in the midst of the region of the French Riviera and Provence, about 2 hours drive from Nice or from Marseille. I’ve just ticked another item in my bucket list as we spent our whole Saturday at this majestic place. Five of us left Nice early in the morning, packed our food and mats for picnic and had our wishful thinking that the water’s gonna be warm enough to swim as it is not yet summer. We were lucky with the spring weather, sunny at 20ish degrees but the water was still ice cold.

Screen Shot 2013-05-10 at 13.24.19

Crossed on foot by hikers all over the world, the Verdon has become a natural site protected since 19901. Although it’s much smaller than Arizona’s Grand Canyon, the Gorges du Verdon is deep, compact, wild and beautiful. From Castellane to the village of Rougons, the Verdon river flows clear and swift, and the road follows along the banks. At Rougons, by the Point Sublime, the river plunges into the narrow rock walls, and there’s no escape until it comes out the western end before flowing into Lac de Ste Croix2.

The place offers various activities for all ages to enjoy whether you’re with family, friends and/or partner. You may explore the area by hiking or cycling, look at the specular view from above through paragliding, climb the world-famous rocks, or camp amongst one of its sites. Water sports lovers can go canoeing, rafting, stand up water surfing, water bike paddle boating (like what we did) and others. Of course, swimming is a must if the water’s warm enough. We’d love to go back in few weeks’ time and try paragliding!

Screen Shot 2013-05-10 at 13.25.35

If you would simply like to relax and enjoy nature’s picturesque view whilst having a picnic, Lac de Ste Croix is a perfect spot.

I’ve also put together some outdoor skincare tips plus quick-fix hairstyling for women:

I used Avène’s sunblock (from the goodiebag I got during my last visit at the Hydrocentre) and I must say it is the best sunblock cream I’ve ever tried. It Screen Shot 2013-05-10 at 13.25.00is non-greasy and has a pleasant smell unlike other creams I used in the past. I love the composition, spreads easily without leaving white marks on my skin and it is very light considering its high SPF protection and water resistance. Of course my skin got oiler in the afternoon as I had a good-paddle-workout through the river so I sprayed Avène Thermal Spring Water and wiped my face with a clean tissue. I’m not a fan of make-up when actively doing outdoor stuff. For quick-fix outdoor hairstyling, I just braided my hair in the morning (it works better if you sleep with your braid overnight), loosened it in the afternoon and tied it back with a simple ponytail as it got warmer. Viola, no need for electric curlers! 🙂

How to look elegant and fabulous when pregnant #pregnancy #fashion #lifestyle

Screen Shot 2013-04-21 at 21.53.36

Well it really does seem that 2013 is going to be a big year for babies… what with the hotly anticipated Royal baby due this Summer in the UK, and the queen of reality TV producing a suitable heir to the Kardashian throne over in the US. With all this going on, it seems that the world is going baby crazy!! Screen Shot 2013-04-21 at 21.54.11

So whilst we all wait with baited breath to see who has the cutest kiddie later this year, we can’t help but spend our time doting on who made the right (or wrong) fashion choices throughout their pregnancy.

So lets start with the not so good shall we? Poor old Kim Kardashian – she is getting it in the ear quite a lot about her  pregnancy clothing choices. But should we really be giving her such a hard time? Shouldn’t you be proud of your beautiful bump? Of course, so why when wearing such tight gear is she getting such a telling off? Well, maybe squeezing into a leather dress when pregnant is a little over board (and may be a little too restrictive for baby bump), but she looks happy and healthy so we’ll let this one slide.

If you want to show off your beautiful bump when out and about, how best should you do this? Well here’s a selection of choices which we think look lovely and elegant:

Screen Shot 2013-04-21 at 22.05.141) Balancing the Bump.

Here you can look stylish and ready to take on the world as you head out teaming a tight top with a fashionable jacket to balance it up, and then some great skinny jeans to remind yourself that yes, you still can fit into them, and yes, you still look fabulous!

2) Blooming in boho chic Screen Shot 2013-04-21 at 22.12.26

The queen of mastering a fashionable pregnancy is Nicole Richie. With Summer quickly approaching its going to be all about cute sandals and floaty dresses (the perfect combination to show off your blossoming bump and glowing complexion). You can find inspiration from Nicoles’ A Pea in the Pod collection – a perfect excuse to do some internet shopping!

Screen Shot 2013-04-21 at 22.21.503) Go all out Glam!

Who says you don’t know how to party when pregnant? On a (relatively relaxed) night out, make sure you still turn heads and dismiss anything dumpy by saying hello to sensational pregnancy wear. Take some inspiration from Peaches Geldof (yes, we never thought we’d say this but…) she looks so fabulous in this vintage looking frock which says ‘I’m pregnant, proud and fabulous’ Who says this look is just for celebrities, get creative and get out there!

So there you go, three simple ways of looking pregnant and perfect at the same time! So Kimmy K may not be our style guru of 2013, but at least she embraces her bumps and curves as every woman should.

But if you are looking for the ultimate style sensation then in our book there really was one lady that managed to capture it all when she was expecting and that was the amazing Angelina Jolie – check out her capturing all of our top three tips for pregnant fashion – what an inspiration!
